del Junco

http://www.carlosdeljunco.com
Carlos del Junco plays the harmonica like nobody else in the
world. Born in Havana, Cuba, Carlos is a pioneer of the 10-hole
diatonic harmonica. Throughout his concert and festival performances
with his four piece band, you may hear an eclectic palette
of jazz, blues, swing, Latin, funky New Orleans and the occasional
African, hip-hop, and ska melody. As a singer, you will hear
a voice almost as unique as his harp playing as Carlos offers
fresh renditions of classic blues and jazz standards. While
respected as a blues artist, the music played by harmonica
maestro del Junco transcends all categorization into sheer
artistry. His command of the harmonica is absolute: he plays
with all the subtleties and nuances of a classical violinist
to the edgier sounds of a blues rocker. Playing with Carlos
is Shawn Kellerman on guitar, Henry Heillig on base and Geoff
Arsenault on drums.
Carlos fuses his respect for tradition with a fresh, innovative,
and truly modern approach. Audiences are blown away at every
performance and return for more at show after show. Frequently
traveling across Europe and North America, this is the first
appearance in the SASKATOON BLUES FESTIVAL for harmonica virtuoso
Carlos del Junco and his band.
Rita Chiarelli
Friday Mar 3/Off Broadway 8:00pm
http://www.ritachiarelli.com
Canadian singer - songwriter Rita Chiarelli lets her music
do the talking. At first listen it’s her voice - and
that three octave range - that garners all the attention!
But Rita's songwriting is a force to be reckoned with, and
both her JUNO nominations were for albums that consist largely
of original material. An accomplished entertainer who quickly
develops a rapport with her audience, Rita has been performing
since the age of fifteen. As Ronnie Hawkins (with whom she
toured in the early years) noted "Once in a lifetime
you hear a voice so blue it makes the angels weep. That voice
is Rita Chiarelli".
Beyond the blues arena, Rita Chiarelli distills a full measure
of musical influences and creates her own unique sound that
defies categorization. An exceptional songwriter of stunning
vocal skill, few can match the wide range of Chiarelli's vocal
styling and the consistently solid lyrics she pens. Rita Chiarelli
is a gifted storyteller, lyricist and master of poetic imagery.
In June of 2004 Rita Chiarelli's 5th album was released. No
One to Blame is Rita's tribute to the blues and on it she
pays homage to some of the great blues masters whose music
has influenced her over the years. Don’t miss Rita Chiarelli,
Canada’s 1st Lady of the Blues.

Bill Dowey and the Blues Devils
Friday Mar. 3/Cosmo 9:00pm
http://www.billdowy.com
Calgary-based blues singer has got the voice, the feel, the
experience, the life. Bill Dowey has got the blues. A powerful
and heartfelt voice, a searing slide guitar tone, and a tour
bus full of experience makes Bill Dowey one of the most convincing
and dedicated blues artists in Canada. From humble beginnings
in the basement of a downtown Toronto church where he discovered
an old out of tune piano to backing some of the great names
in blues Dowey has developed a masterful touch and a well
earned place in blues lineage.
In addition to fronting popular Calgary blues outfit The Hoodoo
Sons for 5 years and now leading his band the Blues Devils,
Dowey has practically made a career of backing great blues
legends. Performing and touring with Albert Collins, Fenton
Robinson, Sonny Rhodes, Lowell Fulson, Roy Gaines, and Canada's
own Dutch Mason, to name only a few, has provided Dowey with
a straight up shot of blues school and an encyclopedic collection
of road stories.

it is played live – singing and playing electric guitar.
As always, a good dose of humour is present in his original
tunes. Next came his Juno-award winning release, “Painkiller”
featuring 13 original songs and backed by a stellar lineup
of Toronto musicians he has worked with over many years.
Davis’ songwriting talent received international recognition
when Colin James covered Morgan’s composition “Why’d

never wavered... and he fully expects to be on the road for
the rest of his life.
